Did you know there are multiple differences between higher end breaker panels such as SQ-D and Cutler Hammer as compared to cheaper brands such as Siemens or even General Electric.
Most electricians will not give you a choice and install a lower and breaker panel at the same cost or sometimes even higher. The compromise you will be making could be dangerous. Let’s quickly review.
Lower end panels have circuit breakers installed with slower response times and higher short circuit currents needed to allow them to trip or open the circuit. The problem with this is if you have an internal wiring problem in your home, you want to immediately disrupt or open the circuit, not eventually! This is definitely not somewhere that you should try to save a couple hundred dollars on. That said, there are also levels of quality within these high end distributors.

Square D. has the QO series and the Homeline, while Cutler Hammer has the CH series and the BR. All of these panel boards have very good wiring protection characteristics but the Square D QO and the Cutler Hammer CH are the top of the line giving you the best protection for your home at a very fair up charge of a few hundred dollars, combined with one of our web promotions, it’s almost a wash..
Another thing you may consider is a whole house surge protector which can be installed directly into your new circuit breaker panel. This device will protect your high end appliances such as LCD or Plasma TV’s and computer equipment from voltage surges which could easily destroy your investments.
